Spring Checklist for Your HVAC System

When spring rolls around, it’s time to start thinking about getting your HVAC system ready for warmer temperatures. At The Comfort Company, we can’t stress the importance of routine air conditioner maintenance enough. Taking proper care of your HVAC system throughout the year will ensure it performs efficiently and lasts as long as possible, so you get maximum return on your investment.

To help you keep your system in tip-top condition, we’ve created a quick and simple spring HVAC checklist to help you get your cooling system set up for hotter days. Check it out, follow our tips, and if your air conditioner needs professional service, don’t hesitate to give us a call!

Change Your HVAC Filters

If you haven’t changed your air filters in the last 30-90 days, swapping out those filters is the first thing you’ll want to do. Old, dirty, clogged filters restrict airflow through your HVAC system, decreasing its efficiency and increasing your heating and cooling bills.

Filthy filters can also contribute to poor indoor air quality as they introduce excessive particulate matter to your duct system. Mold and mildew proliferation can also stem from dirty filters that haven’t been changed in months.

Clean Around Your Air Conditioner

Throughout autumn and winter, organic debris may have accumulated around your outdoor air conditioning unit, but it can’t stay there if you want your a/c to perform optimally. To allow your unit adequate airflow, you’ll want to ensure there’s a clear, two-foot radius around it.

Clean up leaves and branches that have settled around the bottom of the unit, and if you have any nearby greenery, trim it back so it’s at least two feet from each side of the machine. While you’re working, take a minute to give the exterior of the unit a once-over to check for any signs of damage that may need professional attention.

Consider Installing Air Purification

When you live in Minnesota, chances are you spend a considerable amount of time cooped up indoors throughout the winter. But all that time cooped up in your house can have a negative effect on its indoor air quality, especially when you keep your window shut tight and particulate matter gets trapped within your home.

As part of your spring cleaning routine, you may want to seriously consider installing some type of air purification system to clean up the air within your home. According to the EPA, the air inside most buildings is up to five times more polluted than the air outdoors, and continual exposure to that pollution can have deleterious effects on your health.

Schedule A/C Cleaning and Service

To ensure optimal performance and extend the lifespan of your unit, you should schedule a professional air conditioner tuneup and cleaning annually, ideally in the spring. During this service appointment, your technician will thoroughly inspect your unit for potential issues and perform a comprehensive cleaning.

When you call The Comfort Company, here’s what you can expect during your A/C maintenance appointment:

●        Refrigerant testing and leak inspection

●        Duct inspection for leaks and seal issues

●        Evaporator coil airflow testing

●        Verification of proper electric control sequence

●        Electric terminal inspection, cleaning, and tightening

●        Motor and belt inspection and tuneup

●        Thermostat functionality testing

If your unit has any refrigerant that must be disposed of, we’ll also handle the disposal as there are strict laws prohibiting the release of refrigerant into the environment.

Test Your A/C Performance Early

Don’t wait until it gets hot outside to test your air conditioner performance! After your unit has gotten its annual tuneup and cleaning, run it for a while to double-check that it’s working correctly.

Testing performance in the spring allows you to detect potential problems that may necessitate repairs or a complete a/c replacement. When you know your unit may be having issues early on, you can schedule the appropriate service well before temperatures really start to rise.
